They have experienced demographic busts and booms, unsurpassed economic prosperity followed by a recessionary bursting of the bubble, and a globalism that carries both everyday opportunities (international cuisine) and large-scale threats (terrorism).

They arrived before the explosion of the first nuclear weapon. Driven by duty and sculpted by sacrifice, this generation was forged by the experiences of the Depression and World War II, even though many experienced them indirectly through their parents while growing up. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, are often compared to Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor of December 7, 1941. The call to arms in 1941 was met by what has been called the “greatest generation” in the popular press (Brokaw 1998).

A comparison of efforts aimed at public education characterizes some of the differences between the generations. For example, while A Nation at Risk warned adults that Xers were receiving substandard training, among the DotNet generation more students are taking calculus, the major sciences, and advanced placement exams (Howe and Strauss 2000). In public schools attended by DotNets across the country, local communities and national politicians began making efforts to reinvest in the system by raising teacher salaries, enforcing academic standards, or calling for school uniforms (Strauss and Howe 1993; Whitmie 1996).
